Happy Death Day 2 U

A few months ago (I am behind…) I went to see Happy Death Day 2U. Here is my review:

Happy Death Day 2U is the sequel to the 2017 horror Happy Death Day. The first installment saw Tree (Jessica Rothe) repeat the same day over and over, the day repeatedly ending in her murder. The loop will only end when she discovered her masked murderer. Set after these events, Happy Death Day 2U sees Tree stuck, this time in a parallel universe, and once again finding herself a target of the masked killer.

The film is carried, much like the first one, by Jessica Rothe (Tree). She was given more opportunities in this film to show a wide range of emotions while still demonstrating her perfect comedic timing which was perfect for this film, which was comedic but also heartwarming and bittersweet at other times. Rothe is supported by a strong cast, some characters returning from the first film with more screentime, and some new faces. It was a treat to see secondary characters from the first film gain their own storylines and more screentime.

When they announced a sequel, I myself was worried and curious about how they would develop the story, but the storyline of HDD2U is engaging, interesting and is just as exciting as the first one, managing to twist the first installment’s storyline and characters into something new. While the film still featured the same masked killer, it followed the characters and their relationships more than the act of finding the killer’s identity, making it both unique and familiar to the first film without being repetitive.

This film had more of a serious aspect in parts, with Tree feeling conflicted about returning to her
universe, but the film is still comedic throughout. However the comedic aspects of the film don’t taint the more heartwarming scenes of the film that have us feeling and rooting for the main character. The film is a great balance of comedy and drama with both genre complimenting the other instead of running them.

Overall, the film is no masterpiece but it is a fun and entertaining watch that is worth watching, especially if you were a fan of its predecessor.
