Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel is the first female led marvel origin story, and it wears the title well. Brie Larson brings Captain Marvel to life on screen as a fun, unperfect, and relatable warrior, which along with the action, humour, developing origin story and of course, 90s nostalgia, creates an enjoyable film that has something for everyone.
Brie Larson is Vers, a warrior from the Kree, who finds herself in the middle of an intergalactic battle between her people and Skrulls. On Earth, she finds herself having recurring memories of her past human life as U.S Airforce Pilot Carol Danvers. With the help of Nick Fury, she uncovers her past all while helping end the war between the two alien races.

The film was somewhat simple but still effective, enjoyable and as engrossing as any other marvel original movie. One unique factor about Captain Marvel, was the fact that it was not just a Captain Marvel origin story, but also an Avengers origin story, making it even more relevant for the MCU.

With flashbacks that are intertwined with the story, we learn about where Captain Marvel came from along with her, making it a visceral experience as we find out about her past and discovers who she is. However, while it was an origin story in more ways than one, it wasn’t a typical origin story, but was a twist on such as Carol finds her self and discovers her true power. While Captain Marvel has been described as the most powerful superhero in the universe, one of the main messages of the story and something that Captain Marvel has to do as she discovers her true self, is to accept she is still human.

Humanity is an ongoing theme throughout the film and despite the controversy surrounding her gender, the film does not concentrate on this at all, instead focusing on her humanity and imperfectionism, allowing everyone in the audience to relate to her and feel empowered by her, not only the girls in the audience who finally have a powerful female lead to look up to.

Brie Larson does a fantastic job at bringing the character to life, playing the part perfectly and reaching into every aspect of Carol. She manages to convey the complexity of the character as the Kree warrior but also a human who makes mistakes, has human friends and family and at one time was a normal human girl. She empowers audiences as the fierce woman who gets knocked down but gets back up again every time. She is supported by a strong cast, namely Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, who adds a comedic value to the film as her buddy cop sidekick.

Overall the film is simple, but as effective as it can be as an origin story and ticks all the boxes as an entertaining, revealing and action-packed origin story. The film opens new doors for future movies and provides more context for existing ones, and leaves an impressionable impact on the Marvel Cinematic universe. The film is a must watch for Marvel fans and anyone who want to feel empowered by a real and relatable character.
